Is a green energy credit the same thing as a carbon credit?

Green Energy

green energy question by riotsoup: Is a green energy credit the same thing as a carbon credit?
I know how carbon credits are used but I noticed that some companies claim that they “buy green energy credits” as though it’s a positive thing. Don’t companies want to advertise that they sell credits because they don’t use all theirs up?

green energy best answer:

Answer by Peter Reefman
No they’re different things. Related in that they’re both ways to reduce CO2, and both are important. But there are some big distinctions.

Okay you know how carbon credits work at offsetting your emissions so I won’t spend any time explaining those, other than they’re good but should ONLY be used as a last case resort (reduce your emissions first!).

Where green energy comes into play is that it’s produced by renewable sources, such as wind, solar, hydro, etc. Simple as that.

So if you generate 4 tonnes on CO2 for burning the fuel in your car for a year, and another 4 tonnes from the coal burned to produce electricity to power your house for a year, you can use both Carbon and Green Energy credits to zero your emissions from both.

You can’t buy green energy for your car (unless you have an electric vehicle…), so Carbon offsets are the ONLY way to do that. But you CAN buy your electricity from renewable sources, and by doing so your house power consumption hasn’t contributed produced any CO2 at all. You can also use Carbon Credits to offset the house instead, but Green Energy is better if you can.

People get confused and think that there needs to be a separate ‘Green’ power cord to plug your house into. This isn’t the case. What happens is that ALL electricity goes into the same grid and gets used at it’s nearest point. The power itself doesn’t know or care where it’s being used. So the actual physical electricity produced by renewable power might be used by someone NOT paying for green energy, and if you’re nearer to a coal power station, you’ll be using power from there regardless.

But this is the important part. It doesn’t matter where it comes from or goes. What matters is that there’s a DEMAND for it in the first place. For example, if there’s 100GW of power coming from coal, and 1GW coming from Renewables, and no one bothers buying green energy, there’s no reason to make more Renewables. But if MOST people (like, 70GW’s worth) said they want to buy green power instead of coal power, then a HUGE amount of renewable power stations would need to be built, and the coal stations could eventually be turned off. So it’s EXTREMELY important and perhaps the best thing (and easiest) all of us can do. Right now.

But right now there’s still only a tiny fraction of people buying green energy because they’re either not aware of it, or they don’t want to pay the 5c or so more per KW, or they don’t think the world even needs clean renewable energy…

I’m aware of it, I don’t mind the extra money, and I think it’s essential that we switch to clean energy. So I’m one of those that buy Green Energy (as well as offsetting the other stuff).

Hope that helps.

Green Energy The Future Energy

Article by Tony Powers

You may have heard a lot of green energy. If you’ve jumped on the bandwagon of green energy or not, this is certainly not a trend. Green energy is the way forward. Take a look at why green energy, is important and how you can use to improve our lives and the environment. What is Green Energy?Green energy is energy that produces little, if no, by products that harm the environment. For example, fossil fuels like oil are expensive to mine, the destruction of the environment during the actual drilling and production of many toxic products. These same products were directly contributes to greenhouse gas emissions and global warming, not to mention the pollution of our rivers and air.The green energy, solar, wind and geothermal do not cause destruction to the environment, either during their time of harvest, or as a by-product. When you use solar cells for example, to save and create energy, you use energy directly from sunlight. There is no by-product in place and no waste.Benefits of Green Energy Benefits of green energy is enormous. First of all you can think of two major environmental benefits. They contain no waste or pollution of sources of energy or emissions. Elimination of harmful emissions will improve the environment and virtually eliminate the global warming caused by greenhouse gases. In addition, the green energy means no more the destruction of the earth as we drill for fossil fuels. No more oil spills, you dig in the middle of nature and destroy natural resources. However, its immediate and obvious environmental benefits, energy costs long-term green is much more effective. Imagine if your whole house is running the energy from the sun? How much would you save on home heating and electricity bill?Over the course of a year you’d save thousand dollars or more, right? What about in ten years? Yes, initially it will cost to transfer your energy from fossil fuels to green energy, but the initial expense normally paid for within a few years.Green energy is infinitely sustainable and economically viable. Therefore, it is the way of the future. How to Use Green EnergyThe good news is that green energy can be implemented step-by-step. It is not necessary to change the whole house as well as sustainable fuel in one go. You can add a pair of solar panels for the use of passive solar heating and to support sustainable practices. Some energy companies even offer a membership, where you can specify a certain amount of its energy from the wind and solar energy. This depends on where you live, but check it out. Finally, you can support businesses that use green energy. It may take some time to spread throughout the world, but the green energy is more than a passing phase, which is a wave of the future.

Every country in the world is seeking new energy sources as alternatives to fossil fuels. For the best use of such resources, we need to know how much is available, what the limitations are and how to make efficient devices which will harness the energy in a practical, cost-effective way. This book gives quantitative answers to these questions, using basic alternatives and specialized engineering treatises and will be useful as a text for students of physics, engineering and chemistry and as a reference for practising engineers and scientists wanting a rigorous, applications-based overview of renewable energy resources.

This report is an output of the technical assistance activity carried out over 2008-2010 to Alternative Energy Promotion Center (AEPC), which is the nodal renewable energy agency of Nepal. This study has been designed to establish a monitoring system for AEPC to continually measure the results of the renewable energy programs against the targets and to organize an evaluation system that measures the impact of micro-hydro installations on rural livelihoods. Given AEPC s highly visible role, the need to develop a system that provides information on a wide range of technical, operational, and financial parameters is similarly high. This study developed a robust yet simple M and E framework for all the programs of AEPC that is focused on the needs of the decision-makers, as well as the interests of the relevant stakeholders. The integrated M and E system encompasses all of AEPC s programs in micro-hydro, solar, biomass, improved water mills, and biogas, and builds its capacity to execute it. The focus has been to develop performance indicators across the entire causal chain from project intervention to on-the-ground impacts. The M and E framework incorporates not only the activities undertaken and the outputs but also the impact on the beneficiaries which is critical to gain a better perspective of the impact of the interventions and to support future planning processes and decision-making. The final impacts of electrification on households and businesses are evaluated using a primary household and enterprise survey. A wide range of outcomes including quality of lighting, income generation, health, education, fertility, women s empowerment, and greenhouse gas emissions reduction are considered. AEPC is now equipped with not only the state-of-the-art monitoring system but also with a trained staff to sustainably manage and add to the system, as required.

Green Living, Environmental, Energy Efficient, and Durable Home; Info/Education for planning to build one?

Green Energy Home

green energy home question by Nohbdy Ahtall: Green Living, Environmental, Energy Efficient, and Durable Home; Info/Education for planning to build one?
If you watch the “Green Planet” channel, and have seen the show “World’s Greenest Homes”, well then you might get the idea.

I want to build an almost completely energy-efficient house, that is good, maybe even great, for the environment. Solar panels, wind turbines, and whatever else there could be that’d help. I don’t mind using recycled material for construction and furniture, and I definitely don’t mind if I have to have sturdy steel beams and etc. As long as it’s a very durable(in fact, I was hoping for: Durable enough to withstand natural and/or man made disasters), I don’t really mind style, but usually it seems the architecture of such houses ends up looking amazing anyway. If anyone knows of materials and furniture that can “really” last, that’d be nice.

I was hoping someone out there had some good ideas on how to learn all about this kind of stuff. Websites, books, E-books, guides. Prices to use on whatever you may know of don’t really matter since this is for my possible future.

I don’t need it to be too specific in all these areas, in fact, just respond to the title of this question if that’s okay!
Oh yeah brandon h, lol. I’ll have to update my picture, my hair “is” cut.

Living the Green Power Home Vision

Article by Jmj Murray

With all the advances in green power mechanization, it is easier than ever to start adapting their home into a green energy home. A green energy home utilizes renewable resources to supply power, hot water, heat and peace of mind.

There are various methods and means to put into action their green generated power home plan. The first is solar power. In a green power home a person can introduce solar hot water panels which heat and store water for use and an individual can build in solar panels, which use photovoltaic cells to convert sunlight into power. These processes can be high-priced if acquiring them and having them installed by a professional, but there are many number one resources accessible to build a person’s own solar panels and solar hot water systems that can reduce the cost greatly.

If a person is just building their home, a marvelous way to make it a green power home is to bring about passive solar design during development. This means taking favored position or circumstance of south facing sides of the house for heating and cooling. By installing lots of highly efficient windows and heat retaining bricks and stone on their south facing areas, an individual is taking advantage of passive solar methods to produce their green generated power home.

A further addition to the green energy home would be a windmill. Windmills are used to create electricity from the renewable resource wind. Windmills can be installed on rooftops or in yards and present pollution free electricity. Windmills can be purchased from retailers or there are a wide variety of affordable kits at hand for the motivated do-it-yourselfers to handle the implementation of their own green power home plans.

If a person has a stream or a creek on their property, a person may also add to the efficiency of their green generated power home with hydroelectric power. This is also an excellent pollution free option that is painless to maintain and operates as long as there is water obtainable.

The ultimate green energy home would combine all of these resources. By using wind, water and solar to produce electricity an individual is looking not only at huge savings and possible profits from their electricity usage, but a person would truly be green as each of these options contributes little to global warming. To further combine passive solar design and solar hot water systems, a person is reducing their generated power needs exponentially and truly living the castle in the air of going green.

A green generated power home does not call for more upkeep than common homes. Solar technologies require little to no upkeep and wind and water turbines command only regular oiling for peak performance. There is no better time to produce a person’s green energy home and start living ones dreams in green.

How to endure off the power grid and feel the rush of liberty being off the power grid dependence can give. Costless power from the wind, the sun and the water. That sure sounds beautiful, doesn’t it?
